Frequently Asked Questions
The questions the drills raise most often, answered in the order they usually come up.
Questions, Answered
- Why does the drill never tell me the key?
- Because it would answer the question for you. A distance, a chord quality, and a progression are the same objects in every key, so a round that names the key is testing note-naming rather than recognition. Every round here is transposed by its seed, which is also why there are no per-key pages on this site.
- Why only sixteen chord qualities?
- Because a round with two correct answers teaches nothing, and beyond this set the collisions multiply. Two exist inside the sixteen already — a major 6th chord and a minor 7th are the same four tones, and so are a minor 6th and a half-diminished 7th — which is why levels that hide the root never place those pairs in the same answer list. The ninths, elevenths, thirteenths, and altered dominants are deferred for the same measurable reason, not for lack of interest.
- Where are my scores kept?
- In this browser’s local storage, and nowhere else. There is no account and no server, so clearing site data clears your history and a second device starts fresh. Reading your progress explains what the numbers mean.
- Will this give me perfect pitch?
- No, and nothing here will suggest otherwise. What improves with this kind of practice is relative pitch — naming distances, qualities, and shapes — which is the skill that shows up when you transcribe or play by ear. The Learn piece on it sets out the distinction properly.
- How long should a session be?
- Eight to twelve minutes, several days a week, beats one long sitting by a wide margin — recognition is a memory skill and memory answers to spacing. How often to drill covers when to add a level and when to drop back a tier.
- Why are there no chord diagrams?
- Because seeing the answer defeats the exercise, and because the rest of the Warrior Network already draws them well. This site plays sounds and asks questions; when you want to see what you just heard, the network has sites built for exactly that.
