Perfect 4th by Ear

5 semitones — and 3 other distances waiting to be named instead.

The interval drill loads here.

The perfect 4th is 5 semitones across. Sung or played, it is one of thirteen answers, and the reason it stays hard is that 3 distances sit close enough to steal it: major 3rd, tritone and perfect 5th. Turn it upside down and the same two notes come back as the perfect 5th, which is why that one belongs on the list.

Confusion setmajor 3rd · tritone · perfect 5th — drill it against these, never on its own. Once it is solid you will start hearing it inside sus4, which is where the chord rounds pick it up.

Anchor tunes, each with the direction to move your voice — the part of an anchor that actually transfers:

  • Amazing Grace — sing it upward from the reference.
  • Here Comes the Bride — sing it upward from the reference.
  • Eine kleine Nachtmusik — sing it downward from the reference.
