Major 7th by Ear
11 semitones — and 3 other distances waiting to be named instead.
The interval drill loads here.
The major 7th is 11 semitones across. Sung or played, it is one of thirteen answers, and the reason it stays hard is that 3 distances sit close enough to steal it: minor 2nd, minor 7th and octave. Turn it upside down and the same two notes come back as the minor 2nd, which is why that one belongs on the list.
Confusion setminor 2nd · minor 7th · octave — drill it against these, never on its own. Once it is solid you will start hearing it inside major 7th and minor-major 7th, which is where the chord rounds pick it up.
